  • Get the book: Climate Change Denial

    June 6, 2011 | Dan Moutal

John Cook, a regular contributor to the podcast and the mastermind behind SkepticalScience.com, along with Haydn Washington an environmental scientific have written the must read book: Climate Change Denial: Head in the sand:

The book examines the phenomenon of climate change denial. It looks at the many techniques of literal denial, where ‘skeptics’ deny the evidence for man-made global warming. [more]

  • Wherein I agree with Marc Morano

    June 3, 2011 | Dan Moutal

We must not tolerate the same pathetic GW Bush strategy of accepting the alleged AGW science but rejecting so-called solutions –Marc Morano

I am as surprised as anyone, but I actually agree with the above quote from Marc Morano. Of course not in the way Morano would like. No, he is angry that politicians accept mainstream science, while I am disappointed that politicians refuse to do anything about it. [more]

  • Economists are not the enemy

    May 18, 2011 | Dan Moutal

Far too often economists are pitted against environmentalist, when in reality basic economic theory supports strong action on global warming and other environmental issues. The sooner the wider environmental community realizes this the sooner real progress will be made.

  • More on the Muller hide the decline crock

    April 28, 2011 | Dan Moutal

Just in case you didn’t get enough of this in Episode 19, here is Peter Sinclair’s excellent take on Muller’s hide the decline nonsense:

  • Conservative conservationist

    April 20, 2011 | Dan Moutal

From a very uplifting article on the conservative website FrumForum by D.R. Tucker we get a clear, concise conservative/libertarian argument to tackle our GHG emissions:

conservatives and libertarians should strongly support regulation to reduce carbon pollution, since pollution by one entity invariably infringes upon the rights of others (including property rights), and no entity has a constitutional right to pollute. [more]

  • Quote of the day: Climate change vs global warming

    April 4, 2011 | Dan Moutal

If [global mean surface temperature] goes up a lot, the impacts cannot be small, but if [global mean surface temperature] does not go up a lot, the impacts may still be large. –Michael Tobis

Climate change is a more accurate term for what we are doing to the climate system, but the tyranny of Google (aka the fact that more people search for global warming than climate change), means I typically use the term global warming. [more]

  • It is time to drop the pro/anti-nuclear dichotomy

    March 17, 2011 | Dan Moutal

The situation at the Fukushima Daiichi is not good. The situation is so chaotic that reporting even basic facts about what is happening is difficult, though that situation seems to be getting better each day. Understanding those facts is another matter entirely. What is the worst case scenario? Who knows, but it wont be pretty. [more]

  • Climate change solved by legislators [part 2]

    March 16, 2011 | Dan Moutal

More on the attempt to legislate away global warming, this time in a must-read Nature editorial [cached]:

The legislation is fundamentally anti-science, just as the rhetoric that supports it is grounded in wilful ignorance. One lawmaker last week described scientists as “elitist” and “arrogant” creatures who hide behind “discredited” institutions. [more]

  • Climate change solved by legislators

    March 15, 2011 | Dan Moutal

Global warming has been legislated out of existence:

House Republicans rejected amendments offered Tuesday by Democrats that called on Congress to accept the scientific consensus that climate change is occurring, it is caused in large part by human activity and it is a threat to human health.

The amendments, offered at an Energy and Commerce Committee markup of legislation to block Environmental Protection Agency climate change rules, are part of an effort by House Democrats to get Republicans on the record on climate science. [more]

  • Hold your horses, while we clear up the tubes [UPDATE]

    March 13, 2011 | Dan Moutal

UPDATE: Looks like archive.org is up and running again. So everything should be back to normal, and downloads should complete without a hitch.

Archive.org (which hosts the podcasts) is currently down. Hopefully this wont last long, but there is really nothing I can do to fix the issue. Sorry for the hiccup, and keep trying to download. [more]

  • The journalism problem

    March 9, 2011 | Dan Moutal

Much has recently been written on various climate blogs about the problem with journalism.

But I think this is the crux of the issue:

Passive news reporting that doesn’t attempt to resolve factual disputes in politics may have detrimental effects on readers, new research suggests.

The study found that people are more likely to doubt their own ability to determine the truth in politics after reading an article that simply lists competing claims without offering any idea of which side is right. [more]
